June's strawberry harvest marks the beginning of the U-Pick season in Michigan. Because strawberries only last a few weeks, I always closely monitor my favorite strawberry farms to make sure I don't miss my picking opportunity.

Strawberries are an ideal fruit for freezing and using in smoothies and jams. Wash and hull them before storing them in a freezer-safe bag or container. I usually freeze strawberries in 1-cup quantities so I can easily grab the exact amount I need.

Following is a list of U-Pick strawberry farms in the edibleWOW region. Always call ahead before you venture out to make sure they have berries available that day. If you have a favorite farm we have not included in this list, please let us know.

Blakes Orchard, Armada: DeGroot's Strawberry Farm, Gregory;  Middleton Berry Farm, Ortonville; Rowe's Produce Farm, Ypsilanti; Spicer Orchards, Fenton;  Westview Orchards & Cider Mill, Romeo;  Whitakers Berry Farm, Ida
